Sunday Musings: It's the Little Things
“The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones.”
This passage typically fills me with heaps of Catholic guilt. I know I’ve been dishonest in small matters at times, so does that mean I am dishonest all the time?
Luckily, there is always a counterpoint to the idea that we’re never good enough. It turns out that doing seemingly ordinary things is actually part of being trustworthy in small matters. As was pointed out during today’s homily at my parish, we can show trustworthiness by taking out the garbage without being asked, sending a note or a text to a friend, or dropping off nonperishables to a food pantry. And when we show we care in small ways, people will know they can rely on us in greater matters.
This week, let’s not beat ourselves up about not doing enough; instead, let’s do some small things that shows others we care.
