Today, we attended the Browns-Falcons game in Atlanta. The Browns’ loss stung, but that wasn’t the most important event of the day.
The National Anthem was sung by Edward Schrank, a 15-year military veteran who has lost an eye, part of his skull and part of his jaw to cancer. During a video shown prior to the National Anthem, Schrank talked about how he almost lost his voice as well. When that was saved, he decided to dedicate himself to singing. In particular, he challenged himself to sing the National Anthem, something he has done at other sporting events.
Schrank’s rendition is breathtaking not for its perfection, but for its passion. It’s clear he’s inspired by love for his country and a desire to live his life as fully as he can.
After a silly Browns loss this afternoon, I kept going back to the image of Schrank on the giant screen, singing his heart out. That put everything into perspective. The true winners are those who realize how precious life is and make an effort to live each day with that in mind.
