Welcome to Sunday Musings, a semi-regular feature of the Critical Reader. Today, Sunday Musings appears on Monday because...life.
The Gospel reading for Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, came from chapter 13 of Luke:
And He told them this parable:
โThere once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard,
and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none,
he said to the gardener,
โFor three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree
but have found none.
So cut it down.
Why should it exhaust the soil?โ
He said to him in reply,
โSir, leave it for this year also,
and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;
it may bear fruit in the future.
If not you can cut it down.โโ
Whether youโre religious or not, this is a great lesson. If you really want to bloom, you can. If you havenโt been blooming, maybe you havenโt been cultivating yourself or cultivating the right things about yourself. Give yourself another chance. Once you start to bloom, nothing can stop you.
Make it a great week!
This liturgical cycle is very interesting. Lots of passages that we don't usually read.
I have never heard this parable before, which surprised me. We are given talents that we must nourish and to use them for the good of others. I love figs!
