An Arrest Has Been Made in Kaden's Murder
Jeffrey Grant, 34, was arrested Tuesday on aggravated murder charges involving the shooting death of 10-year-old Kaden Coleman-McCurry in Cleveland last Friday. According to police, Grant was also arrested on a parole violation. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. Bail was set at $2 million.
Police say another suspect in the murder is currently at large.
A search on the Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts website shows two previous cases that were closed for Grant. Both of them date back to 2009. One included charges of felonious assault, attempted murder, improper discharging of a firearm at or into a home or school and criminal gang activity. According to cleveland.com, both incidents were the result of gang battles between the Nelson Boys, of which Grant was a member, and the Benham Miles Family.
Grant spent 12 years in prison. In 2023, he was again arrested for having a Glock 17 in his car. After pleading guilty, Grant was sentenced to nine months in prison. “About two months later, Cuyahoga Falls police say he led them on a high-speed chase on State Road and Ohio 8 with three children in his car, according to court records. Police called off the chase, and [Grant] wasn’t arrested,” cleveland.com reported. For that incident, Grant faces charges of fleeing and eluding and child endangering.
Meanwhile, Kaden’s family prepares for a memorial in a local park this Saturday. The GoFundMe that was set up to help pay for Kaden’s funeral is still open. You can make a donation or send condolences here.
It is not known if the people in the car with Kaden knew Grant. Police reports indicate that Grant shot directly at the car as it was backing out of a driveway. The driver told Kaden and his mom to get down, but they soon realized that Kaden had been shot. If there was beef between Grant and someone in the car, it wasn’t worth the life of a 10-year-old boy.
One has to wonder, what was Grant’s life like growing up that by the age of 19, he was already involved in violent activity? And why, after years in prison, did he revert to his criminal ways? It’s a common theme and one that has to be addressed if the violence is going to stop.
